Long Bio
Raised in the Massachusetts town of Auburndale, singer-songwriter and acoustic guitarist Rob Cunningham has spent a lifetime balancing music, family, work, and storytelling — and the result is a body of songs rooted in honesty, heart, and lived experience.
Rob first stepped onto the local music scene alongside his brother Steve Cunningham and longtime friend Paul Conrad in the power-pop garage band Victims of Circumstance. The trio performed throughout the area and released a four-song EP of original music before life took Rob in another direction. While building a successful career as a chef and raising a family, he never stopped writing songs, quietly developing the thoughtful songwriting voice that would later define his work.
As the years went on, Rob returned to performing, both as a solo artist and with the local cover band Top Dog, while building a home studio and recording extensively under the name Big Ugly Dog. Over a fifteen-year span he independently wrote and released four self-produced albums — Off The Leash, New Tricks, Stories, and There’s Life In The Old Dog Yet — all of which remain available on streaming platforms.
Drawing inspiration from folk and roots storytellers like Gordon Lightfoot, Steve Earle, and Guy Clark, while embracing the melodic instincts of artists such as The Beatles and Nick Lowe, Rob’s music blends acoustic warmth, lyrical sincerity, and memorable hooks. His songs explore family, resilience, social conscience, humor, hard times, and the small moments that shape everyday life. At the center of it all is a belief that music has the power to connect people and strengthen communities.
In recent years, Rob fulfilled a lifelong dream by stepping into the studio to record music under his own name. Working with acclaimed producer and multi-instrumentalist E.J. Ouellette and legendary drummer Dave Mattacks, Rob released his debut EP I Can Tell, followed by the acclaimed 2026 EP Carrownisky Strand. The release further established Cunningham’s place within the contemporary folk and Americana landscape, earning praise for its heartfelt songwriting, Celtic-inflected roots sound, and authentic storytelling.
Recognition soon followed. Rob has received multiple Global Music Awards, including Silver Medal honors for “How I Make It Through,” "I Can Tell," “Carrownisky Strand,” and “Jeannie Says,” along with a Bronze Medal for “That’s No Way To Treat A Lady.” He was also named a finalist in multiple categories for the 2026 International Singer Songwriters Association (ISSA) Awards, including Male Rising Star, Male Album of the Year, and Musician of the Year.
Continuing to build momentum, Rob was selected as a showcase performer for the 2026 Singer-Songwriter of Cape May Conference, appearing at Delaney’s Irish Pub & Grill as part of the nationally recognized event celebrating independent songwriting and roots music.
Whether performing intimate acoustic sets along the Maine seacoast or recording songs shaped by decades of life experience, Rob Cunningham brings humility, warmth, and authenticity to every stage and studio session. His music feels less like performance and more like conversation — honest songs shared among friends.
